    Empowering Boltzmann creep for the prediction of COVID-19 fatality trends"

    Short CV of Christian Hellmich

    Christian Hellmich is full professor at Technische Universität Wien (TUW, Vienna, Austria), directing there the Institute for Mechanics of Materials and Structures. At TUW, he received his (civil) engineering diploma (1995), his Dr.techn. (PhD, 1999), and his habilitation (2004). Being on leave from his academic position at TUW, he was Postdoctoral Fellow at M.I.T. from 2000 to 2002; and over the years, he has held several short-term visiting professorships in France, Italy, and Germany.

    Together with collaborators across the globe, he has developed (micro)structural bio-chemomechanical models, in terms of theoretical foundations, computational realization, and experimental validation for various biological and man-made systems; including bone and soft tissues, cement and concrete, wood and wood composites, rock and soil, brick, steel, rubber, graphene, DNA, as well as
    metal-, mineral-, polymer-, and glass-based biomaterials. These mathematical models are employed
    in concrete, tunnel, pipeline, and biomedical engineering. 

    Also trained as a violinist, he has been active at the crossroads of Science and Arts, from which he takes a broad cultural perspective on the nature of universities and their role in society. This is also reflected by his interdisciplinary work integrating engineers, physicists, chemists, biologists, and medical doctors. 

    Christian Hellmich has co-authored 167 peer-reviewed publications; and about the same amount of book chapters and proceedings papers; he has given more than 300 presentations at international conferences and universities, often as invited, keynote, or plenary speaker. 

    He serves in editorial roles for several peer-reviewed journals, including Journal of Engineering Mechanics (ASCE), Mechanics of Materials, and AIP Applied Physics Reviews. He has provided extensive reviewing and advisory service for various universities and science foundations, including his role as a panel member for the European Research Council (ERC). He has also served in the Engineering Mechanics Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (EMI-ASCE), in particular so in the Board
    of Governors and in various technical committees, as president of the International Association for Concrete Creep (IA-CONCREEP), as president of the Austrian Chapter of the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB), as symposium organizer for the Materials Research Society (MRS), and in the
    Board of Directors of the Young Academy of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW).

    His activities have been recognized through several national and international awards, such as the Kardinal Innitzer Advancement Award of the Archdiocese of Vienna (2004), the Science Recognition Award of the Region of Lower Austria (2005), the Zienkiewicz Award of the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS, 2008), an ERC grant (2010), and the Walter L. Huber Research Prize of ASCE (2012); moreover, he was named Fellow of EMI (2014), Fellow of the
    European Alliance of Medical and Biological Engineering & Sciences (EAMBES, 2019), corresponding member of ÖAW (2019), and Fellow of the Society of Engineering Science (SES, 2023).

    Fracture imaging

    The workshop combines an overview of the physics behind fracture initiation and propagation in brittle materials, with practical examples of the use of microseismic and acoustic monitoring for the imaging of the fracture process. The examples include laboratory rock deformation tests, hydraulic reservoir stimulation in the field and fracturing associated to caving in mining. Passive and active methods will be examined, with examples at reservoir and laboratory test scales. The workshop will cover the following points:

    • Principles of fracture initiation and propagation
    • Fractures and seismicity
    • Passive imaging of fractures
    • Monitoring fracture interaction and coalescence
    • Seismic source parameters
    • Source mechanism: fault plane solution and moment tensor
    • Active surveys: deformation and fracturing imaging

    Participants will be provided with tutorials covering the topics presented in the workshop and a 1-week licence of our seismic processing software to practice and navigate through the examples of monitoring of fracturing processes at field and laboratory scales.

    Aim of the workshop: To sustain the contribution of the mineral industry to the world’s economy, mining activities should take place beyond a 2,000 m depth. Violent and uncontrolled failure of rocks in deep mines is a severe threat to this goal.     Exkursion A

    SKW Kühtai

    DieTIWAG (Tiroler Wasserkraft AG) errichtet auf über 2000 m das neue Pumpspeicherkraftwerk Kühtai 2. Mit zusätzlichem Wassereinzug aus dem mittleren Ötztal und hinteren Stubaital wird die Erzeugung von Strom aus natürlichem Zufluss in der erweiterten Kraftwerksgruppe erheblich gesteigert. 

    Die Kennzahlen des neuen Kraftwerkes sind:

    Neuer Speicher mit 31 Mio m3 Inhalt

    Steinschüttdamm mit 113 m Höhe

    Beileitung mit 25,5 km Länge und Durchmesser 4,20m

    Jahreserzeugung aus natürlichem Zufluss 216 Mio kWh

    Leistung im Turbinenbetrieb 130 MW bei einem Durchfluss von 90 m3/sec

    Leistung im Pumpbetrieb 140 MW bei einem Durchfluss von 70 m3/sec

    Bei der Exkursion sehen Sie die Arbeiten für die Schüttung des Dammes mit Erdkerndichtung inklusive der Materialgewinnung und der Materialaufbereitung vor Ort. Die Betonarbeiten in den beiden Kavernen für die Maschinenzentralen sowie die Tübbingherstellung für die Sohltübbinge des Beileitungsstollens.

    Exkursion B

    Semmering Basistunel

    Baustart für den Semmering-Basistunnel war 2012, der Tunnel ist 27,3 Kilometer lang und wird zweiröhrig ausgeführt. Gebaut wird er von fünf Stellen aus. Die Vortriebsarbeiten sind schon weit fortgeschritten, auch mit dem Bau der Innenschale wurde bereits 2020 begonnen. Er ist Teil der 470 km langen neuen österreichischen Südstrecke Wien – Villach, die bis 2030 modernisiert wird.

    Die Exkursion umfasst eine Projektvorstellung und anschließende Besichtigung des

    des Bauloses SBT2.1 – Tunnel Fröschnitzgraben. Sie sehen dort die imposante Baustelleneinrichtung für die unterirdischen Bauarbeiten die über zwei 400m tiefe Schächte versorgt werden. In weiterer Folge werden die Arbeiten in den beiden Tunnelröhren am Fuße der Schächte begangen. Die Teilnehmer werden dazu mit der nötigen Schutzkleidung ausgestattet und auf mehrere Gruppen aufgeteilt.

    Exkursion C

    Brenner Basis Tunnel

    Der Brennerbasistunnel (BBT) ist ein flach verlaufender Eisenbahntunnel mit einer Länge
    von 55 km zwischen Innsbruck (Österreich) und Franzensfeste (Italien) und somit ein
    grenzüberschreitendes Projekt von europäischer Bedeutung. Der BBT besteht aus zwei
    einspurigen Tunnelröhren mit einem Durchmesser von 8,1 m die in einem Abstand von 40
    bis 70 m verlaufen. In Abständen von 333 m verbindet ein Querschlag die beiden Röhren.
    Eine Besonderheit des BBT ist der durchgehende Erkundungsstollen.

    Die Exkursion beginnt im modernen Infocenter der BBT „Tunnelwelten“ in Steinach am
    Brenner mit einer Projektpräsentation und im Anschluss erhalten Sie die Schutzausrüstung
    (Helm, Stiefel etc.). Danach fahren Sie über den Zugangsstollen in den Tunnel ein und
    können die Querkaverne und die Nothaltestelle St. Jodok und auch eine Montagekaverne
    für die Tunnelbohrmaschinen, die Überleitstelle sowie die Deponie Padastertal
    besichtigen.

    Exkursion D

    Tauernmoos

    Mit der Realisierung des Pumpspeicherkraftwerkes Tauernmoos erweitert die ÖBB Infrastruktur AG die für die Bahnstromerzeugung wichtige Kraftwerksgruppe im Salzburger Stubachtal.

    Die beiden bestehenden Speicherseen Tauernmoossee und Weißsee mit einem Höhenunterschied von ca. 220m werden mittels Kraftabstieg und

    Kraftwerkskaverne unterirdisch verbunden. Das Kraftwerk Tauernmoos weist eine Gesamtleistung von 170MW (Megawatt) und rund 460GWh (Gigawattstunden) Jahresenergieerzeugung auf.

      

    Die Exkursion beginnt mit einer Besichtigung der Bestandskraftwerke Uttendorf 1+2.

    Nach einer Fahrt zum Baubüro am Enzingerboden, einer Stärkung (Jause) und der baustellengerechten Adjustierung (Bekleidung) werden wir durch die bereits hergestellten Tunnelerschließungsanlagen bis zum Einlaufbauwerk am Weißsee auf knapp 2.300m fahren.     des Kraftabstieges und dem Herzstück der Anlage - der in Bau stehenden Kraftwerkskaverne vorgesehen.

    Zum Abschluss ist noch die Besichtigung der 1.100m langen Schwergewichtsstaumauer Tauernmoos (auch im Inneren eines sehr großen Kontrollgangs) auf ca. 2.000m Seehöhe vorgesehen bevor die Rückfahrt nachSalzburg erfolgt.

    Limberg III

    Die VERBUND Hydro Power GmbH (VHP) errichtet derzeit das Pumpspeicherwerk Limberg III (PSW Limberg III) als Erweiterung der Kraftwerksgruppe Glockner – Kaprun. Bei diesem Projekt handelt es sich um ein Pumpspeicherkraftwerk mit einer Leistung von insgesamt 480 Megawatt. Es wird vollkommen unterirdisch zwischen den beiden bestehenden Speicherseen Mooserboden (Stauziel 2.036 m) und Wasserfallboden (Stauziel 1.672 m) errichtet.

    Es werden also die vorhandenen Jahresspeicher mit einem Gesamtvolumen von 160 Millionen Kubikmetern Wasser als Oberbecken und Unterbecken zusätzlich zum bestehenden Kraftwerk Kaprun-Oberstufe und dem PSW Limberg II im Pumpturbinenbetrieb zur Stromerzeugung genutzt.

    Der neu zu errichtende Triebwasserweg wird ausgehend vom Speicher Mooserboden unterirdisch in der orographisch rechten Talflanke über eine Länge von rund 4.3 km zur Kraftkaverne Limberg III geführt. Die Kavernenanlage liegt rund 450 m tief in der Hangflanke unterhalb der Limbergsperre. Sie besteht aus einer Kraftkaverne mit 2 regelbaren Maschinensätzen à 240 MW, einer Trafokaverne und den beiden Generatorableitungsstollen. Das genutzte Triebwasser wird über einen 613 m langen Unterwasserstollen in den Speicher Wasserfallboden zurückgeleitet.

    In der Kavernenanlage erzeugen zwei Maschinensätze, bestehend aus einer reversiblen Francis-Pumpturbine und einem Generator/Motor, elektrischen Strom. Die Energieableitung erfolgt mit 380 kV Nennspannung von der Kavernenanlage mittels gasisolierter Leitung und wird an die bestehenden Energieableitungen angebunden.

    Nach einer kurzen Projekterläuterung werden Sie die Höhenbaustelle besichtigen. Oberirdisch werden die Stauseen Mooserboden und Wasserfallboden sowie die Baustelleneinrichtung der Höhenbaustelle und die Deponie Drossen besichtigt. Untertägig wird je nach Arbeitsfortschritt der Triebwasserstollen bzw. Einlaufstollen begangen werden. Im Anschluss daran geht es in den Kavernenbereich, wo der Arbeitsfortschritt des Kavernenausbaus zu sehen sein wird. Je nach Arbeitsfortschritt kann der Schachtfußbereich, die Verteilrohrleitungen oder der Unterwasserstollen begangen werden. Die Exkursion wird in der Baustellenkantine mit einem gemeinsamen Essen abgeschlossen.
